Cape Town's Hidden Treasures

Exploring the Mother City…

Last December, LeighAnn, the boys, and I took a trip to Africa. Our entire expedition was fascinating, but there’s just too much to cover in one post. So, I’m going to break this down into several blogs. This one focuses on Cape Town, South Africa.

Cape Town is consistently ranked among the top 10 cities in the world to visit. Known affectionately as the ‘Mother City,’ it is a colorful and vibrant city surrounded by dramatic mountains and sandy beaches. The magic of Cape Town lies in the nexus of natural wonder, diverse cultures, art, design, and a thriving food and wine scene.

Cape of Good Hope

Once feared as the "Cape of Storms" for its treacherous weather and currents, the Cape of Good Hope plays a pivotal role in the historic maritime route between Europe and Asia, still preferred over the Suez Canal by some captains today. This landmark is steeped in tales of the supernatural, notably the legend of the Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship cursed to never make port and said to be sighted in these waters. The cape's ecosystem is a sanctuary for unique flora and fauna, including the Cape Floristic Kingdom and the Chacma baboons.

Before You Go: Conceal any food around the baboons. I’m not kidding!

One fascinating natural phenomenon associated with Table Mountain is the "tablecloth," observed in the spring and summer months. This event occurs when the warm cloud layer meets the cooler air over the mountain, resulting in a thick, rolling mist that blankets the summit.

Cable car ticket prices vary depending on the time of day, with discounts offered in the afternoon. Click here to learn more.
