The Ultimate Finale to Our African Adventure

Our stay on Alphonse Island felt like stepping into a dream—a peaceful sanctuary where the raw beauty of nature meets the luxuries of modern comfort. Every moment on the island revealed something new to marvel at, from ancient tortoises and vibrant birds to secluded beaches and endless ocean views. Free from distractions and boundaries, this magical place became our personal haven to truly unwind and reconnect. It was the perfect, serene conclusion to an African journey that had already surpassed every expectation.

A Brief History of Alphonse Island

Alphonse Island’s rich history adds depth to its beauty. Discovered by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century and named after their ship, San Francisco, the island has evolved over centuries. From its early days as a stop for seafarers to a thriving coconut plantation in the 1800s, and now a sanctuary for conservation and ecotourism, Alphonse has always been a hidden gem. Today, visitors can explore remnants of its plantation past while witnessing the island’s forward-thinking commitment to sustainability.

Arrival in Paradise

Getting to Alphonse Island is an adventure in itself. A scenic one-hour flight from Mahé takes you over the breathtaking turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, setting the tone for the paradise that awaits. From the moment we landed, the island’s serene charm and welcoming atmosphere embraced us.

Unforgettable Experiences

Alphonse Island is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers, offering endless opportunities to connect with its unspoiled beauty. Mornings began on secluded white sand beaches, warmed by the sun and kissed by the ocean breeze. The lush tropical forests invited exploration, alive with vibrant flowers and the hum of wildlife. Beneath the crystal-clear waters, coral reefs revealed a kaleidoscope of tropical fish, playful dolphins, and graceful manta rays—a true underwater wonderland.

No visit would be complete without meeting the island’s resident Giant Aldabra Tortoises, a majestic reminder of nature’s resilience, or witnessing the magical sight of hatchling turtles braving their first journey to the sea. For those drawn to water, kayaking through mangrove-fringed lagoons, paddleboarding across calm horizons, or snorkeling alongside parrotfish and rays were unforgettable adventures.

Birdwatchers found their paradise here, with over 100 unique bird species, including rare Arctic migrants. Biking through hidden trails uncovered secret spots, while the island’s spa provided a tranquil escape with soothing massages, deep-tissue treatments, and revitalizing facials accompanied by the calming sounds of the ocean.

For me, the most unforgettable moment came during a fishing trip with the boys on the expansive blue waters of the Indian Ocean. As we sailed under the vast turquoise sky, it felt like time stood still. We laughed, bonded, and felt the warmth of the sun on our faces as we reeled in our catch. Later, we grilled the fish on the back of the boat, sharing a simple yet perfect meal. The taste of fresh fish, seasoned by the sea breeze and the joy of family, created a memory I will treasure forever. It was one of those rare days when everything aligned, filling me with gratitude for the time spent with my boys.

Dining: A Celebration of Flavor

Meals at Bijoutier Restaurant were an experience of their own. Each dish celebrated the island’s natural bounty, from freshly caught seafood to vibrant garden produce and indigenous herbs. Rooted in Seychellois Creole and French culinary traditions, the chefs infused modern creativity into every bite.

Whether enjoying Creole-themed dishes, beachside barbecues under a starlit sky, or an intimate lunch on a nearby sandbank, the dining experiences were as unique as the island itself. The care and attention to dietary preferences made every meal feel personal and unforgettable.

Accommodations: The Beach Retreat

Our stay at the Beach Retreat was nothing short of perfection. This secluded haven offered spacious comfort with four beautifully appointed bedrooms and panoramic ocean views, all surrounded by tropical greenery. Just steps from the beach, it provided the privacy and serenity we longed for.

The main lodge, with its reception area, beach bar, swimming pool, and lounge, added another layer of indulgence. Evenings spent sipping cocktails by the pool and savoring the sea breeze felt like the epitome of relaxation.

The Perfect Farewell

Alphonse Island's unspoiled beauty, commitment to conservation, and the freedom it offers make it a truly unique escape. As the final chapter of our African journey, it encapsulated everything we had come to cherish—untouched nature, vibrant culture, and unforgettable memories.

With hearts full and spirits renewed, we bid farewell to this slice of paradise and boarded our flight to London, England, ready to embrace the next chapter of our adventures. Alphonse Island will forever remain a shining highlight in our story, a place where time seemed to stand still, and life felt effortlessly beautiful.
