Decking the Halls Like a Pro
As you may have noticed, Christmas is looking a little different this year.
Okay, a lot different. Big parties – out. Buffet tables groaning with food – out. Traveling to visit family – out. However, that doesn’t mean that the holidays can’t be beautiful. Actually, for some interior designers, it’s a banner year.
One of those designers is Roger Higgins, of R. Higgins Interiors in Nashville. Roger helped Paul and LeighAnn Gravette create their Nashville homestead, which was featured in Better Homes & Gardens (A Mix of Textures and Materials Sets This Nashville Ranch Apart from the Rest). He turned something quite ordinary into a showplace that is at once lovely, practical, and comfortable.
So, how has his business been this year? According to Roger, great In fact, he’s been busier this season than ever before. He believes that, with more people staying home because of COVID-19, seasonal décor will continue to be even more of a focus in the future. That’s why he’s encouraging all his clients to invest in holiday décor items that can be reused each year.
His first foray into seasonal décor began years ago. He’d worked relentlessly to create a design that was absolutely perfect. Then his client brought out some old holiday decorations that had seen better days. He had to intervene to keep Christmas from looking tired and sad.
Now, each holiday season, Higgins hires experienced staff to bring a Currier & Ives appeal to around eight large Southern homes. Most of them have more than one tree and multiple stairwells to decorate. From design to execution, it’s a big job, a project, but Roger says that with this kind of work, “You do it once and they are hooked.”
Over and above the financial boost, there’s the spirit of Christmas, something that makes people want to help others feel joy. To Higgins, the holidays mean everything, and it brings him untold gratification to be able to do something that spreads cheer for his clients – especially now, especially this year. Who said Christmas was canceled?
